One Church, Two Networks, and a Village With One Bar of Signal

A parish with members in Kampala and members in a village past Mubende learns that reliable SMS isn't about the platform — it's about accepting how Uganda's networks actually behave.

Brother Kizza's church has one member list and two entirely different Ugandas inside it. About sixty families live in and around Mubende town, where the MTN bars sit at three or four most days. The other forty live out past Kyabakadde, off the murram road that turns to soup when it rains, where a phone sometimes has to be lifted toward the window just to catch enough signal to load a message.

He found this out the hard way, the way most admins do — by watching a "sent" count that didn't match a "received" reality. He'd announced a special harvest service, sent the SMS to All Members on a Thursday afternoon, and by Sunday morning half the village side of the congregation hadn't heard a thing. Mama Nakato only found out because her son came home from town and mentioned it in passing. She wasn't upset, exactly, but she did ask, gently, "Kale nga ffe tetumanyibwa?" — so we aren't told, then?

Why "sent" and "received" are two different promises

Here's the part that took Brother Kizza a while to accept: no platform, generic bulk SMS portal or otherwise, can promise a text lands on a phone with no signal. That's not a software problem. It's telecom infrastructure in rural Uganda, and it's the same physics whether the message came from a church, a SACCO, or a political campaign blasting numbers from a spreadsheet. A tower with patchy rural coverage delays or drops messages regardless of which app pressed send.

What a generic bulk SMS portal does make worse is the guessing. Log into a separate site, paste a list you exported once, hit send, and you genuinely have no idea afterward who got it and who didn't — you'd have to phone around to find out, which defeats the purpose of texting in the first place. FaithDash didn't fix the signal in Kyabakadde. Nothing can. But because every send logs to message history with a sent/partial/failed breakdown per recipient, Brother Kizza could actually see, the following Monday, which numbers had bounced or failed to confirm delivery — instead of wondering. He could see it wasn't a mystery of "some people just don't check their phones." It was a specific, nameable list of numbers in a specific part of the parish.

That distinction mattered more than he expected. Once he could see the pattern — the same handful of village numbers showing up as undelivered send after send — he stopped assuming carelessness and started planning around it: the Sunday announcement for that group now goes out on Thursday evening instead of Sunday morning, giving those phones more chances to catch a signal window over a couple of days instead of one.

What actually changed, and what didn't

The disappointment, if we're honest, never fully goes away. There will always be a Sunday when someone in the village genuinely doesn't get the word in time, because the tower nearest their homestead was overloaded or their phone was off charging near a solar panel that hadn't caught enough sun that week. Load-shedding out that way isn't scheduled and polite like it can be in town — it's simply whether the sun cooperated with somebody's small panel.

The relief came in smaller, more honest doses. Knowing which numbers to worry about. Sending important announcements a full day earlier for that segment, using the same "All Members" send but timed differently. And discovering that a short, plain-English message — no emoji, no accented characters — reliably fits in a single SMS part, which matters more in a low-signal area than people realize: fewer parts means fewer separate pieces that all have to land for the message to make sense, and it's cheaper too, at UGX 35 per part either way.

What this actually costs and doesn't promise

FaithDash's SMS runs through the BulkSMS Uganda gateway, the same class of telco-connected infrastructure any Uganda bulk SMS platform uses — there's no special "rural delivery" tier, no premium routing invented for this problem, and no honest platform would claim one. The pricing is the same UGX 35 per part whether the recipient is in Mubende town or past Kyabakadde.
